I
SPY FOR THE DTI
On 23rd
September, the Moronic Surveyors released the record "I Spy for the DTI" (Farce
records 7" single DTI 007, 12" single DTIT 007).
The
Moronic Surveyors were a combination of pop groups Boys don't Cry and Sad Cafe, singers
John Wilson and Paul Young, assisted by Rob Day as "the man from Whitehall" and
Laserettes Erin Kelly and Liz West.
The song
was based on the 1969 track by Jamo Thomas "I Spy for the FBI".
At midnight on the 25th, it was announced that Laser 558 would be off air
for a few days for essential generator repairs. They returned the following day at 19.38.
Another
newcomer arrived on the 28th; Chuck Cannon was on air at 20.00. There were a few problems
over the next few days, on the 2nd October, the auxiliary generator was in use.
At 01.00
on the 4th, it was announced that the station would be off air indefinitely to repair
storm damage to the aerial system, but would return as soon as possible. Laser resumed
broadcasting at 06.00 on the 8th. Only three deejays were on board the ship, each hosting
a six-hour programme.
While the
official version of the close was aerial servicing, the London Standard for 10th October
claimed that fuel had run out.
At 12.09
on the 11th, generator failure forced the station off air. They returned at 07.57 on the
13th, when the transmitter was switched on, followed at 07.59 by the standard opening
announcement and 08.00 normal programming resuming.
The 14th
October was the last time the DTI vessel was mentioned over the air. The same day the line
up changed with the arrival of another new presenter. 05.00 Craig Novack, 09.00 John
Leeds, 13.00 Jeff Davis with his first show, 17.00 Jay Mack, 21.00 Chuck Cannon until
01.00 close.
Liz West
and Chris Carson had now left Laser, although Erin Kelly, officially on leave was due to
return.
